Position Overview:
The Electrical Chief Estimator will lead the estimating team, providing expert oversight and management of the electrical estimating process. This role requires a seasoned professional with extensive knowledge of electrical systems and cost estimation, capable of developing accurate and competitive bids for projects. The Electrical Chief Estimator will work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure all estimates align with project requirements and company goals.
Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and mentor the estimating team, providing guidance and support.
    • Oversee the preparation and review of all electrical cost estimates, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
    • Implement best practices and standardize estimating processes to improve efficiency and consistency.
  2. Cost Estimation:
    • Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare accurate electrical cost estimates.
    • Assess and quantify material and labor requirements for electrical systems and components.
    • Develop detailed and comprehensive bid proposals, including cost breakdowns and justifications.
  3. Bid Preparation:
    • Review and interpret contract documents, scope of work, and technical requirements.
    • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to gather necessary information and validate estimates.
    • Prepare and present final bid proposals to management and clients.
  4. Project Coordination:
    • Ensure estimates are aligned with project objectives and budgets.
    • Address any discrepancies or issues identified during the bid process.
    • Provide support and guidance throughout the project lifecycle to ensure adherence to estimated costs.
  5. Client and Vendor Relations:
    • Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
    • Negotiate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing and favorable terms.
    • Address client inquiries and provide clarification as needed regarding estimates and proposals.
  6. Market Research and Analysis:
    • Stay current with industry trends, codes, and regulations affecting electrical estimating.
    • Analyze market conditions to provide insights and recommendations for cost-effective solutions.
    • Continuously evaluate and improve estimating methods and tools.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of [10] years of experience in electrical estimating, with at least [7-10] years in a leadership role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical systems, components, and construction methods.
  • Proficiency in estimating software and tools (e.g., Accubid, Bluebeam, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certification (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator, LEED AP) is a plus.
  • Experience with large-scale commercial or industrial electrical projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in project management software.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Capability to work in office environments and occasionally visit construction sites.

Duties:

  • Oversee daily operations of their estimating department
  • Manage a team of estimators. Vacations, sick time, praises, discipline, etc.
  • Mentor and train all estimators.
  • Receive and evaluate incoming RFPs for scope, value, market constraints, estimator availability, and feasibility of award.
  • Download RFP documents into project folders and setup project number.
  • Assign estimator or team to specific estimates.
  • Relay expectations based on bid forms, bid dates, and timing requirements.
  • Continually check-in with estimators for updates and ongoing issues with estimates to evaluate additional resource needs/reductions and timing.
  • Perform job walks/Prebid meetings as needed.
  • Keep up to date with on going estimates to changes in bid dates, scope, and documents.
  • Perform page turn reviews to evaluate the completeness of estimate based on all documents, incomplete take-off, installation requirements, etc.
  • Look for possible errors in the estimating program that need adjustment and/or fixing. Report error to the proper individual.
  • Perform final review of closeout items based on market, input from operations/management, and received quotes.
  • Adjust estimate as needed to account for escalation, project management, equipment, general expenses, overhead, and profit to remain competitive and profitably.
  • Submit scope letter to owner/GC with inclusion and exclusion based on input from estimator(s) and RFP documents.
  • Field post bid questions and make needed adjustments to estimate and scope letter as required.
  • Attend post bid meeting with material needed for the meeting. I.e. estimate, livecount drawings, manpower spreadsheets, etc.
  • Track post bid outcomes.
  • Update logs and files as needed.
  • Engage with operations, safety, and management for up to date conditions that may affect future proposals.
  • Continue to evaluate SOP for better practices opportunities.
  • Adjust SOP to meet on-going needs of estimating department.
  • Continue to evaluate the needs of the estimating department for estimator needs and new technology to enhance the department.
  • Make suggestion of upgrades, computers, monitors, etc.
  • Make connections with vendors, subcontractors, GCs, owners, and designers to track contact information.
  • Involved with estimator performance reviews.
  • Help implement a continuing education program.
