Position Summary:

The Touring Arena Event Lighting Crew Chief is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the lighting setup, operation, and teardown for touring events in arena-sized venues. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to work effectively under the pressures of a fast-paced touring schedule, with a particular emphasis on power calculations and distribution to ensure optimal and safe lighting operations.


Key Responsibilities


Pre-Tour Planning:

  • Collaborate with the production manager to review lighting design and requirements.
  • Develop and distribute detailed lighting plots, rigging plans, and power distribution layouts per venue
  • Calculate power requirements for all lighting equipment, ensuring proper load distribution across available power sources.

On-Tour Responsibilities:

  • Lead the lighting crew in the setup, operation, and teardown of lighting equipment for each event.
  • Ensure that all lighting equipment is installed safely and according to design specifications.
  • Conduct daily briefings with the lighting crew to discuss the schedule, safety protocols, and any special requirements for each show.
  • Operate or oversee the operation of lighting consoles during events, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting any issues that arise.
  • Perform regular maintenance and repairs on lighting equipment to ensure reliability throughout the tour.
  • Maintain inventory records of all lighting equipment and manage the logistics of transporting equipment between venues.
  • Design and implement power distribution plans that optimize efficiency and safety.
  •  Calculate total power requirements for each event, considering all lighting fixtures, consoles, and additional equipment.
  • Coordinate with venue staff to ensure adequate power supply and proper grounding for all equipment.
  • Monitor and manage power consumption during events, adjusting configurations and power loads as necessary to prevent overloads and ensure stable performance for all departments.
  • Oversee the teardown and packing of all lighting equipment after each event.
  • Conduct post-show evaluations to identify areas for improvement and address any issues encountered.
  • Ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and stored for transport to the next venue.


  • Supervise and mentor lighting technicians and assistants, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Ensure all lighting operations comply with safety regulations and industry standards
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures for the lighting crew.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Lighting Crew Chief or in a similar leadership role in the event production industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of lighting equipment, rigging, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to create, read and decipher event drawings, transitioning into developing a plan of deployment for the entire lighting team
  • Proficiency in power calculations and distribution for large-scale lighting setups.
  • Proficiency in operating lighting consoles and software (e.g., MA Lighting, ETC, Avolites).
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
