Position Overview:
A Survey Crew Chief will not only perform all of the functions of a Land Surveyor but also coordinate and lead teams of 2-3 surveyors as the chief of party. The successful candidate will use their knowledge, skills, and creativity to efficiently conduct various surveys as directed by the Survey Department head, or Engineer. The ideal candidate will also, assist in training new surveyors.
Essential Duties:
Overall
- You will lead and be the responsible person in-charge of all day-to-day operations of a survey crew for boundary, topographic and construction surveys for a wide variety of public and private projects
- Ensure that surveyors, technicians and assistants properly complete all of their assigned tasks and duties safely, accurately and in a timely fashion
- Lead and perform construction staking and transportation projects
- Proficiency with Trimble and Spectra GPS, Trimble/Spectra Robotic Total Station (S7), Trimble (TSC3) and TDS Ranger Data Collectors
- Read and interpret construction drawings/specifications and understand all aspects of the project specifications and tolerances
- Communicate daily with surveyor and technician regarding project schedule and work progress
- Interact professionally with client representatives and land owners
- Ability to organize field notes, documentation of work, and create and maintain sketches
- Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain
- Compute geodetic measurements and interprets survey data to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features
- Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems
- Execute administrative tasks: timesheets, GPS logs, mileage logs, trucks and equipment
- Operates company vehicles to transport team
- Oversee the maintenance of vehicle and field equipment
- Assist in training survey crew members
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Experience:
Required:
- Technical degree in drafting, engineering or architectural technology, construction and 2-3 years’ experience as a Survey Crew Chief
Or
- 5-6 years’ experience as a Surveyor without a degree 2-3 of which were as a Survey Crew Chief
And
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions
- 18 years of age and clean driving record
- Strong mathematics and numerical reasoning skills
- Able to effectively lead a team
- Must be able to handle multiple projects and reports simultaneously
- Strong critical thinking, problem solving aptitude and analytical abilities
- Outstanding organizational skills
- Intermediate computer skills with fluency in: Microsoft Office Suite
- High-drive, energetic, positive, strong personal initiative, and sense of urgency / Growth-mindset personality
- Superior internal and external communication skills with a demonstrated ability to break down and relay complex issues, effective presentation of numeric data, and the ability to connect with individuals at all levels of the organization
Preferred:
- 2 Year/Technical Degree in drafting, engineering, surveying, construction and 2-3 year’s prior experience as a Survey Crew Chief
- Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D
- LSIT and/or CST
- Knowledge of robotic and drone field survey methods
- Prior management/leadership skills with the ability to navigate complex interpersonal relationships
