Job Description: As a Construction Estimator, you will play a critical role in the construction project lifecycle by providing accurate and detailed cost estimates for various construction projects. Your primary responsibility will be to analyze project plans, specifications, and other relevant documents to determine the overall cost of materials, labor, and equipment required for each project. You will work closely with project managers, architects, subcontractors, and suppliers to gather necessary information and ensure the accuracy of your estimates. Additionally, you may be involved in value engineering exercises, where you propose alternative materials or methods to reduce costs while maintaining quality standards.
Responsibilities:

  • Review project plans, specifications, and drawings to understand the scope of work.
  • Analyze project requirements and develop accurate cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
  • Obtain quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, evaluating and comparing bids to ensure competitiveness and quality.
  • Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers to clarify project details and address any discrepancies or omissions in the plans.
  • Conduct site visits, if necessary, to assess site conditions and gather relevant information for estimating purposes.
  • Prepare comprehensive and detailed estimates, including material take-offs, labor hours, and equipment costs.
  • Collaborate with the procurement team to source and price construction materials and equipment.
  • Provide input on value engineering initiatives to optimize project costs without compromising quality.
  • Maintain a database of historical cost data and construction metrics to improve estimating accuracy over time.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, pricing, and market conditions that may impact project costs.
  • Participate in bid review meetings and assist in the preparation of bid proposals.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Proven experience as a construction estimator in the commercial  construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and costs.
  • Proficient in using construction estimation software and tools.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills, with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with local building codes, regulations, and permitting processes.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with various stakeholders and negotiate with suppliers/subcontractors.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify cost-saving opportunities and propose alternative solutions.
  • Familiarity with project management principles and methodologies is a plus.
