Position Description: Senior Estimator/Estimator
PURPOSE:
Prepares complete estimates for bid process and/or contract negotiations as directed by VP and/or Senior Estimator, manages estimating workload and staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
·         Key subcontractors in order to use those contacts to strategically win large and profitable projects.
·         Understand that risk equal dollars and manage and minimize risk for the best outcome.
·         Identify all risk on the project and in the contract and specifications prior to starting work
·         Tactical and Strategic thought process required.
·         Entrepreneurial skill and talents are highly valued.
·         Understanding the “Big Picture” of what the company is attempting to accomplish on a project and the ability to perform all the big and small task necessary to paint the “Big Picture”.
·         Understands the strategic nature of our position in the market and uses that knowledge tactically to win the company work with the best Owners and General Contractors in a competitive Transportation/Infrastructure market.
·         Ability to learn and understand the strengths and weaknesses of our competitors and use that knowledge in strategic bid pursuits and negotiations with customers.
·         Ability to identify and pursue projects with limited competition, greater margin and a clear advantage for Select to win the project.
·         Ability to envision how winning and successful execution of projects can lead to additional wins, deeper market penetration and new, highly profitable market opportunities.
·         Operational knowledge and capability or the ability to work closely and in close coordination with Executive and Operational Management.
·         Ability to read and understand and clearly identify risks quickly in voluminous specification documents.
·         Review and comprehend construction proposal requests including but not limited to drawings, specifications, existing site conditions, pre-bid meetings and state and local code requirements to develop scope of work.
·         Ability to draft a complete and clear scope of work for incorporation into all contracts.
·         Understands that Safety and Injury prevention begins at the estimate/job pursuit phase. Ensure that all bids consider and take into account the safety of our customers, the public and specifically our operational teams. Ensure that Scope letter lays out clearly all safety related scope inclusions, exclusions and conditions. Ensures that all bids reflect the company safety program and that safety is our primary concern in winning work.
·         Attend meetings as required by management for all meetings with the owners, General contractors, and/or others as needed. Request quotes and direct interaction with subs and suppliers.
·         Interfaces with owner, A/E, and other contractors to provide engineering and cost data regarding project feasibility (as required by management).
·         Develop a solid turnover plan of the estimate and all important and incidental estimating information to the Operations team led by a Project Manager and General Foreman.
·         Recognize and record necessary information, be able to ask questions in a public forum during job walks.
·         Coordinate and produce accurate estimates for electrical construction projects assigned.
·         Review and prepare bid documentations required for submittal, i.e. special insurance, bonds, DBE, etc.
·         Prepare estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work; includes all materials, labor, equipment and sub-contractors.
·         Prepare budgets and assist in creating preliminary project schedules following awarded contracts as assigned. May include estimating extra work items, change orders, credits; procuring material, monitor progress, cost/budget, revenue, etc..
·         Coordinate scope of work with Project Manager, Subcontractors and field team.
·         Maintain Master file of all documents used in the preparation of an estimate and be able to produce that document printed or electronically as needed.
·         Work alone or with other estimators on projects in a harmonious manor to meet bid date deadlines.
·         Coordinate the assembly of bid proposals in Accubid.
·         Lead a coordination turn over meeting with the project management staff and team players on awarded projects.
·         Request and pick-up drawings and RFP packages.
·         Perform additional assignments as directed by direct Supervisor.

EXPERIENCES & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
·         Ability to show a track record and proven ability to win and demonstrate successful and profitable completion of estimated projects
·         5+ years as an estimator in electrical construction industry
·         Background as an electrician be advantageous depending on the individual
·         Ability to read and understand bills of material and scope letters from vendors, suppliers & subcontractors.
·         Advanced knowledge of estimating techniques and cost controls, plus ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems essential. Knowledge of multiple disciplines required.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, planning and analytical skills required.
  • Must be proficient in math and be able to calculate yardage, tonnage, and volume
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and good driving record and be able to drive from jobsite to jobsite when necessary.
  • Working with Bid Tracer a plus.

·         Working conditions consists of temperature-controlled buildings or outside elements such as rain, cold, and heat when working with in open environments, driving from various locations or attending meetings, etc. Noise levels are moderate to loud depending on work location.
EXPERIENCE:  

  • Proven experience in effectively estimating similar construction projects.
  • Experience with Accubid or estimating spreadsheets is highly desired.
  • 4+ years of estimating experience in the transportation market in one or more of the following areas (highway rail, intermodal, port, communications, T&D and airport)
  • Strong computer skills desired
  • Thorough knowledge of construction procedures, estimating techniques, all engineering disciplines, cost control systems and accounts required

EDUCATION: 

  • 4-year engineering or construction management degree preferred or equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience required. Other college degrees or solely experience will be considered
