Position Overview
The General Superintendent provides executive-level field leadership for large-scale construction projects. This role is responsible for the successful execution of field operations, ensuring schedule adherence, quality standards, workforce performance, and safety compliance across assigned projects. The General Superintendent serves as a key liaison between field staff, project teams, and clients, while also playing a critical role in preconstruction planning, team development, and overall project delivery strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations Oversight

Ensure field operations conform to the project schedule, safety requirements, and quality standards.

Conduct weekly site visits to monitor construction progress, jobsite conditions, safety, and adherence to company standards.

Lead problem-solving efforts to address project challenges and deliver results on time and within budget.

Evaluate and ensure that workmanship and materials meet project specifications and contract documents.

Lead development and maintenance of project schedules and contribute to monthly schedule updates and narratives.

Monitor and ensure timely project punch list completion and participate in one-year warranty walkthroughs.
Team Management and Development

Recruit, assign, and evaluate field personnel including Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Field Engineers, Project Engineers, and interns.

Provide coaching, mentoring, and training to field teams.

Ensure effective field training, including job-specific safety instruction, is delivered consistently across all job sites.
Preconstruction and Planning

Participate in sales presentations, client interviews, and preconstruction planning meetings.

Review plans for constructability and lead site logistics planning including staging and access.

Provide input on project budgets, staffing needs, and schedule development.

Support technical reviews and provide feedback on contract scopes and Exhibit Bs.

Attend project turnover meetings and assist in project startup planning.
Client and Stakeholder Communication

Maintain strong working relationships with owners, architects, consultants, and project teams.

Attend all relevant internal and external project meetings.

Actively manage client communication and represent the company at key project touchpoints.

Address performance concerns or opportunities for improvement with transparency and leadership.
Project Support and Safety

Ensure implementation of standard operating procedures across all job sites.

Monitor safety performance and compliance with all regulations and company policies.

Serve as a vocal advocate for field operations and safety excellence.

Coordinate resources and provide field-related leadership for inspections, staging, and technical problem-solving.
Training & Development

Lead field-specific training programs and participate in internal curriculum development.

Ensure that all field staff meet training requirements and receive the necessary support to excel in their roles.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.

Minimum of 15 years of experience in general contracting with demonstrated progression to senior field leadership.

Deep experience in managing large, complex commercial or industrial projects.

Strong understanding of project logistics, construction sequencing, field supervision, and safety standards.

Proficient in interpreting plans and specifications.

Skilled in workforce development, team mentorship, and staff alignment.

Exceptional organizational, decision-making, and conflict resolution abilities.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and balance operational and strategic field needs.

Familiarity with local, state, and national building codes, regulations, and permitting processes.

High level of emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and communication skills.

Work Environment
This role includes frequent travel to active job sites in various phases of construction. While some time is spent in the office environment, the majority of work involves on-site leadership and supervision. The role requires standing, walking, and moving throughout construction sites, sometimes in varying weather conditions. Must be comfortable with jobsite walking, equipment observation, and team interaction in a dynamic environment.
